Your first university visit might be for orientation, registration, an interview, an exam or a meeting with an advisor. Whatever the reason, knowing where to go and what to bring makes the day much easier.
This checklist helps you prepare step by step, from the week before to the moment you arrive.
The week before
Checklist
- Confirm the building and room number, not just the campus address.
- Read any emails from the university for instructions or required documents.
- Look at the official campus map and note the nearest entrance.
- Check visitor parking or transit options.
- Set up any student account or app you were asked to activate.
Documents and items to bring
Checklist
- Photo identification.
- Your student number or application number, if you have one.
- Printed or digital copies of requested documents.
- A phone, charger and a way to take notes.
- Payment method for parking, food or fees you were told about.
On the day
- Leave early. Campus traffic and parking can be busy, especially at the start of term.
- Look for welcome desks, signs and student volunteers.
- Keep the contact details of the office you are visiting handy.
- Note where washrooms, food and quiet spaces are located.
Common challenges
- Similar building names: double-check the full name and code.
- Construction and detours: allow extra walking time.
- Busy start-of-term periods: expect lines at service desks.
Accessibility considerations
Most universities have an accessibility or student accessibility services office. Contact it ahead of your visit if you need accommodations, accessible parking information or a step-free route.
